‘Creating safe Spaces for Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming individuals in Kenya since 2012.’

A Kenya That Celebrates Diversity.’

Jinsiangu is a Kenyan-based organization founded in 2012 to empower and protect the rights of Intersex, Transgender, and Gender Non-Conforming (ITGNC) individuals. Through advocacy, community support, and partnerships, we strive to build a society that embraces diversity, justice, and bodily autonomy for all.

About US

At Jinsiangu, we are more than an organization—we are a movement. Founded in 2012 by a courageous group of intersex and transgender individuals in Nairobi, we began as a safe space for dialogue and solidarity. Today, we stand as Kenya’s leading advocate for Intersex, Transgender, and Gender Non-Conforming (ITGNC) communities, driving systemic change through advocacy, research, and holistic support.

Our work is rooted in a simple yet radical belief: every person deserves freedom, dignity, and the right to live authentically. From spearheading national policy reforms with the Kenya Police Service to pioneering life-changing programs like the National Transgender Advocacy Network (NTAN), we are committed to creating a Kenya where diversity is celebrated, not silenced.

OUR PROGRAMMES

INTERSEX PROGRAMMES

The intersex program is dedicated to advocating for and advancing the rights, welfare, and visibility of intersex individuals in Kenya.

With a milestone in recognition through efforts of the intersex task force in the 2010 general elections, the Programme has been key in implementing priority strategies for the recognition and advancement of rights for intersex persons in health, education and within various aspects of society.

TRANSGENDER PROGRAMMES

The transgender Programme operates at various levels, including international, national, sub-national, regional, and community levels.

The primary goal of the Programme is to enhance the integration and functioning of transgender individuals within mainstream society, enabling them to achieve and sustain a globally accepted standard of living

HIV PROGRAMMING

HIV program has been a critical part of the organization's work, addressing the specific needs of transgender and gender-diverse persons in Kenya.

The Programme begun as a response to the overwhelming health disparities faced by the transgender community in Kenya.

The Programme adopts a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention and care through biomedical, behavioral, and structural interventions

RESEARCH & POLICY

We engage in and conduct community led research projects such as the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) and the Legal & Gender Recognition Study. The research we do helps steer our work to meet an ever-evolving global landscape of opportunities and solutions to realize our goals.

MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENTS

We solidify collaborations with different stakeholders who are critical to realizing our long term strategies. These include among a few the Intersex Person's Implementation Coordination Committee (IPICC), the Ministry of Health (M.O.H), the Kenya Police Service and private sector actors

GENDER NON-CONFORMING PROGRAMMES

Nonbinary & GNC programme was established in 2020 to support individuals above the age of 18 who identify as gender non-conforming or nonbinary.

The Programme offers tailored advocacy, activities, and interventions to address the distinct needs and difficulties faced by this community, as they navigate a gender system that is predominantly binary and characterized by rigid gender norms within society.
