Call for Applications: ‘Freedom to Thrive’ Opposition Monitoring Convening 2025 — Centering Collective Community Power to Counter Anti-Rights Agendas

In response to a growing wave of anti-rights legislation, misinformation campaigns, and systemic repression targeting LGBTQIA+ individuals and organizations across East Africa, Jinsiangu, together with regional partners, will host the Opposition Monitoring Convening 2025. This flagship event, part of the broader Freedom to Thrive initiative, will be held in Nairobi on May 15, under the Theme: Centering Collective Community Power to Counter Anti-Rights Agendas.

This convening comes at a critical moment. As coordinated attacks on LGBTQIA+ communities intensify, so too must our collective capacity to organize, resist, and build. The event aims to provide a protective and affirming space for reflection, resistance, and renewal. Participants will engage in critical conversations and strategy-building to advance legal, psychosocial, digital, and cultural resilience across the region.

The gathering will bring together a powerful mix of LGBTQIA+ human rights defenders, legal practitioners, mental health professionals, digital safety experts, donors, artists, and storytellers to:

  • Strengthen strategic litigation frameworks and legal readiness

  • Coordinate opposition monitoring and early response mechanisms

  • Expand access to digital, legal, and psychosocial protection

  • Reclaim civic space through cultural resistance and narrative power
