HIV & YOUNG PEOPLE (TGDI)

USAID Fahari ya Jamii through Jinsiangu launches its HIV programming services to 18-24year old Trans and gender diverse persons in Kenya.

According to National Syndemic Disease Control Counsil (NSDCC), nine counties have registered an increase in new HIV infections with Kenyans aged 15-29 contributing to 61% of the infections.

As a response to the rising concerns on the soaring numbers of infections among the youth, the Ministry of Health is embracing local technologies and HIV prevention methods as the country is facing shrinking donor support on HIV programs which has dropped from 32% in the last decade to 18% in 2021.

Amidst the MOH’s efforts in putting sustainable structures to bend the new HIV infections curve, the government is contemplating whether to implement a comprehensive sex education in schools following the Kenya Demographic survey of 2022 which states that the sexual debut age in Kenya is 15years.

NSDCC states that the rising number of new HIV infections among the youth could be fueled by the society’s attitude towards sexually active teenagers. NSDCC further points out on the rise in stigmatization against people living with HIV/AIDS stating that this will pose a serious setback on the fight against the HIV epidemic.

The country however while working closely with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS(UNAIDS) aims at achieving zero HIV infections by the year 2030.

To meet the 95-95-95 UNAIDS target aimed at ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030, USAID Fahari ya Jamii through Jinsiangu is offering comprehensive HIV prevention treatment and care as well as differentiated HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for 18-24year old Trans and gender diverse persons (TGDs)

The 95-95-95 cascade aims at diagnosing 95%, having 95% of those that turn out HIV positive on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and achieve viral suppression for 95% of those treated by 2030.

USAID Fahari ya Jamii through Jinsiangu aims in attaining the 95-95-95 target by UNAIDS among 18-24year old TDGs since they constitute of the youth which attributed to half of the new HIV infections.
